Did you know on average at least 30 minutes of travel time is added to and from destinations during peak hours in Brisbane? What is the cause of this? The answer: traffic congestion. Good afternoon Lord Mayor Graham Quirk and representatives of the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to speak to you on an issue that affects us all in this great city of ours. Whilst the short-term investment may heavily impact budget restraints, the long term benefits will outweigh these costs. Known as the car effect, people use cars without thinking about the physical, environmental and economical impacts. If there is more awareness of these impacts and productive investment in public transport, Brisbane’s congestion problem will improve. With cheaper fares, greater availability and reliability of the public transport system, people will see the benefits and use these services.
