Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has become the archetypal gothic novel. With its combining of gothic and romantic themes set the tone of the narrative. While DC Comics the Batman being known as one of the more darker and popular of their superhero line up. Sparking many movies and TV shows based on the adventures of the caped crusader; including the 2005 movie Batman Begins. This movie, retelling the origins of Batman shares many of the same themes with the novel of Frankenstein.
The Jazz Age The Jazz Age was the period of time between the end of World War I and the Great Depression. A controversial issue arose over whether or not the Jazz Age was an impact on African Americans socially, politically, and economically. Socially, Jazz music became a positive spirit for African Americans and it kept them away from anger. Politically, African Americans developed new attitudes and many men became optimistic leaders after World War I. Economically, African Americans successfully published poems and were recruited as singers for money.
Frankenstein’s Monster as a Tragic Hero Aristotle once said that "A man doesn 't become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall" (Carlson). In Frankenstein, many argue that Victor Frankenstein himself is indeed the tragic hero of the novel. I believe that the creation of Victor Frankenstein (the monster) is the actual tragic hero. There are several components to being a tragic hero, two of the most important are their tragic flaw, and the component of a tragedy or a tragic ending to the story. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is without a doubt tragic through many characters in different ways, but in my eyes, the creature is the character that sticks out with the most characteristics of a tragic hero.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein criticizes the human quest for knowledge through science and it highlights the moral implications of such undertakings. By following the story of the “mad scientist”, Victor Frankenstein, we see how a man’s ambition can be his downfall. However, Shelley notes that although it is dangerous to partake in immoral science, this curiosity to know more about the world around us and who we are is human instinct. This essay will consider Hindle’s premise that Frankenstein is a criticism of the “lofty ambition of man”. One could argue that by writing Frankenstein, Shelley was “loftily ambitious”, just like the characters in her novel.
The classic novel Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley in 1818, displays the use of literary devices, foreshadowing, allusions and figurative language, which aid the reader in understanding the authors opinion on scientific exploration. Monsters are often classified based upon their appearance and inhumane characteristics. In the book Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein tears apart graveyards for the formation of a new being, which is brought to life with electricity. Frankenstein was fascinated with life itself and wanted to create this being through the dead with the use of science. After multiple years of suturing this new being together Victor succeeded in bringing this creature to life. Although realizing what he had just created Victor is repulsed by this new being and calls him a Monster.
In Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein spends two whole years toiling to create a being which is comprised of the body parts of various dead corpses, for the purposes of science. Finally, he creates the “monster”, who commits a multitude of crimes, resulting in the deaths of many innocent people. These horrific murders raise many questions concerning who is to be held accountable. Victor walked away from the situation he created instead of facing his actions. If he had chosen to stay this could have prevented the heinous crimes committed by the monster as a result of Victor’s mental and emotional Neglect.
During the Romantic era, Mary Shelley wrote one of her famous book called Frankenstein, which became respected literature of Romantic era. Even though Frankenstein was created mainly to emphasize horror, it rather developed different point of views; it captured many audiences who sought for ideas of science and nature. Throughout the story, Mary Shelley mingled science, human emotions, and nature in order to create supernatural tale that can be understood despite specks of illogical ideas. To make the story as much as smooth as possible without any disbeliefs, Mary Shelley incorporated science and morality in order to enhance her story to be easily absorbed and felt.
Frankenstein uses mysterious circumstances to have Victor Frankenstein create the creature. This is found in the raising of the dead and other aspects of the unknown unexplored fields of science. Frankenstein possesses an atmosphere of mystery and suspense pervaded by a threatening feeling enhanced by the unknown accompanying the monster. During the letters at the beginning of the novel, when describing the creature as “a being which had the shape of a man, but apparently of gigantic stature” (9) it is not yet clear as to what Frankenstein is speaking of, unknowns like these are frequent throughout the book due to the concentric nature of the story, many questions are created based off of stories chronologically later than the rest of the book. Frankenstein has a way of making things sound overtly dramatic, “as if possessed of magic powers, the monster had blinded me to his real intentions; and when I thought that I had prepared only my own death, I hastened that of a far dearer victim,” (175) while surely Frankenstein does not have magic powers the reader is left with a question as to who could possibly be a “far dearer victim” (175).
Previous to the existence of the monster, readers are introduced to an ambitious, benevolent Victor Frankenstein. He exuded an excitement and passion about learning, though only for very specific subjects. “My temper was sometimes violent, and my passions vehement; but by some law in my temperature they were turned not towards childish pursuits but to an eager desire to learn.” (Shelley 19) Though his studies on creating life artificially had eventually grown tiresome—“My cheek had grown pale with study, and my person had
