Right now, hundreds of refugees flee from their homes for safety, a better life, a better education, a better home, better jobs and many other reasons. For so long, refugees are still being treated like outsiders. They leave their countries even if it means leaving their families, jobs and everything else, bringing whatever they can with them. Even if it means leaving with an empty stomach, going through the cold and wet. They go through hardships, sufferings and they endure society’s negative treatments. Neglected. Ignored. Pitied. Victimised. They’re tired, hungry, and scared, but why do we have these beliefs of them changing our culture? Why? “There is no “us” anymore, as a tidal wave of immigrants sweeps away what’s left of our national identity…” This fragment was extracted from the newspaper “The Foreign Invasion” written by Andrew Bolt in 2018 addressing his xenophobia/ opposition against immigration/refugees in Australia. He also address that “Immigration is becoming colonisation, turning this country from a home to a hotel.” There is no necessity to address refugees and migrants as “colonisers”. By using emotive and candid language to grab the public’s attention, this then subliminally influences the public’s perception believing that “refugees/migrants are shattering the sense of US”. Recently, the public had undertaken a survey of how Australians feel about immigration and national identity. Results from 2022 poll conducted by the Lowy Institute revealed that 31% of participants had viewed that if Australia is too open to people all over the world, we risk losing our identity as a nation (Institute, 2019). These representations are not only rigged but also used to promote dehumanisation of refugees by pessimistically showing the public that they are NOT supposed to be in this country. Have you thought of how the media is rarely questioned about their presentations of what WE believe as “facts”? We as public never really get to see the primary resource of these comments. We never get to know the real stories. So, why do believe them? This is because of the persuasive reports utilised by biased commentators and journalists. THIS is why we need to take action. Imagine if you were in THEIR position. That after all of your hardships and sufferings, you come to this country and get rejected, being treated like an “outsider”, people telling you that “you’re not meant to be in this country”.
