Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. There are two types of abortion medical and surgical.
a. According to British Pregnancy Advisory Service the medical abortion is usually only available up through nine weeks of pregnancy. The types of medical abortions are Methotrexate and Misoprostol (MTX) or Mifepristone. MXT is only used in the first seven weeks of pregnancy, however this medication is not used often in the U.S. because of the availability and effectiveness of Mifepristone. Mifepristone is a medical abortion used in the first seven to nine weeks of pregnancy. It is more commonly known as the abortion pill.
b. The second type of abortion is surgical abortions. The two types of surgical abortions are vacuum aspiration and dilatation and evacuation. When a vacuum aspiration is preformed the pregnancy is terminated using gentle suction. This is done in the first fifteen weeks of pregnancy. In the first fourteen weeks the surgery is performed with a local anesthetic at fifteen weeks the abortion is conducted with a sedative. In the Dilatation and evacuation procedure the abortion is conducted by using narrow forceps passed through the neck of the womb and some gentle suction.
