Have you ever just wanted to snuggle into your covers and never leave the warm comfort of your bed? Or have you ever asked your yelling parents for 5 more minutes of sleep on a school morning? I know I have. As a freshman in high school, waking up at 6 in the morning five days a week has got to be the one thing I dread. However, my private high school in Massachusetts has implemented one day of the week where school starts an hour later.
School start time and its effect on students has been an issue that many teachers and parents have argued over for many years. In districts all throughout the country, elementary, middle, and high schools start classes around different times, commonly making high schools begin their classes the earliest. The current standard start time for most schools is between 7-9 am, with some starting even earlier. This day-to-day schedule has been deeply rooted into the mind of many students for as long as they can remember with many believing that any type of change to this schedule would not benefit students or their studies. However, some experts argue that starting school later would have positive effects on both the physical and mental health of
I never want to get up in the morning and I’m pretty sure a lot of other people would agree. Why does school start early? In my opinion school would be about 5 times better if it started. School isn’t really bad at all. It 's just the fact that I have to get up early that makes going to school depressing.
For these important and practical reasons, schools should not change school start times. If schools delay the start time, after-school activities will be rescheduled and no dramatic impact on sleep times will
Sleeping Schools Countless students all over the US struggle to keep their eyes open throughout the day because school classes start too early in the morning. If we were able to give an hour to students in the morning, we would see an increase in their physical mentality, their academic skill level, and an overall happier lifestyle. Many people will argue that starting school too late in the morning will cause after school activities -- such as sports and other clubs -- no time to meet before the night ends. But I must mention that we don’t need to push the start time that much later to see a huge improvement on student’s test scores, overall grades, and a student’s mood. The current school start time is unacceptable when thought about logically, and we must make the changes to have school start at a later time.
There are many speculation on if schools should start later. Yes school should start later because students need more sleep, there would be better attendance and there would be less car crashes among teens. This essay will explain why school should start later, and how it is important for students. One reason school should start later is sleep. Students need at least seven hours of sleep at night, when they don't get enough sleep they become less motivated.
School should Start Later School districts should make a change to their schedule. School starting later would fix a bunch of huge problems about school districts. Some people may say that school starting early isn’t that bad though, it would just be annoying to wake up early. School districts should change their time because of the bus arrival times, the education of students, and sleep concerns of kids.
That’s why schools should push back school times for teens health. Others claim that schools shouldn’t push back school time because, it will affect after school activities. They say that this would be a few of the actives that would be affected. After school sports, other after school’s programs, jobs, babysitting younger siblings, etc. Those are just some of the programs they mentioned.
Sarah Cardillo October 31, 2017 Class Period 3 Why School Start Times Should Be Later Teenagers and kids these days are loosing a lot of their sleep time due to early school start times. Teenagers aren’t getting the sleep they need to have their minds and bodies function correctly. Not getting enough sleep can lead to many health problems. Teenagers and kids not getting their sleep can result in many different mental and physical problems.
School Should Start Later A recent poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation found that 60% of children under the age of 18 complained of being tired during the day, according to their parents, and 15% said they fell asleep at school during the year. This proves that kids aren’t getting enough sleep before school. I believe that a later middle school start time would have many beneficial effects on kids. As a result, kids would be more focused in class because they would be getting more sleep, that would lead to better grades, and finally reduced absenteeism.
However, more problems will be present if a new schedule is created. Osage Trail Middle School and Fort Osage High School should not opt for a later start time because it would cost the school more money for bus transportation, could conflict with students’ jobs and other responsibilities, and doesn’t necessarily mean students will be more rested. “In the current economic climate, many school systems are cutting costs by increasing class size (i.e., hiring fewer teachers). Achieving the AAP's well-intentioned goal would require districts to spend more money on buses at the same time they spend less in the classroom”(Source 3). Schools are already having a hard time paying for necessary items and funding for their schools.
Later School Start Times “‘I’ve gained an hour of sleep,’ she said. ‘I definitely feel a lot better. I find myself waking up around 7:30 without an alarm because it’s a natural time. It’s a great, great feeling.’” Says Lily Grey Rudges, a high school student in Seattle(At these schools, later start times get an A-plus for youths needing more sleep).
Wrong, Especially if a student is involved in extracurricular activities such as sports, band, or even having a job. Once a student athlete gets out of school after 3:00 pm, they have practice during the appropriate season which would have them returning home around 5 or 6 o’clock depending on the amount of practice needed. If schools change they school time they would get out later. Leaving sports to either not have practice or have to get out of practices super late. And if they have later practices then they would have to go home late and still have to do their homework.
I’m pretty sure most people hate getting up super early in the morning to get to school. Am I right? Well I think it’s the worst! In my opinion, I think school should start later because it is better for one’s health and it’s better for students’ concentration in class.
A reason for this is that waking up too early could be dangerous. In highschool students begin to learn to drive, some owning their own cars to drive to school (Pietrangelo and Watson). When they have to wake up early in order to drive to school they may be too tired for it to be considered safe for them to drive on the roads. This leads to car crashes that leaves their lives and the person who they hits life in danger. Not to mention those who are close enough to walk to school also may be too tired to properly pay attention.
