Environmentalism is a political ideology that focuses mainly on the conservation and protection of the earth and other human beings. Petra Kelly goes into detail about what environmentalism should be and how to achieve it. Petra Kelly was a fairly important figure for the environmentalist movement in the post-World War II era. She helped to found the West German Green Party (Die Grünen), a party that is still prominent in German politics today, though it is not ultimately popular enough to be a major political party in the German political system. According to Kelly, inner peace will lead to outer peace which will lead to peace with others. If that were really the case, though, peace would have been achieved a long time ago, but humans aren’t always interested in peace. Conflicts happen extremely often throughout the world of politics. As a Christian myself, I agree that individuals who engage in politics need to be guided by an ingrained set of morals, usually attained from one’s spirituality, in order to achieve the good for all who are effected by the policies that emerge from political engagement. The use of power by one who is guided by spirituality is not so much focused on manipulating nature and innocent individuals than on manipulating the structure in order to benefit nature and the individual. However, politics is an amoral activity and has been for a long time, especially in the modern sense. The German Green party has been the closest to being able to implement “thinking green” into the country’s political system. Perhaps as the generations come and go, environmentalism will become a more popular ideology as people grow concerned with the blatant dehumanization of citizens and the destruction of the natural world around civilization. At the same time, it’s not certain whether or not environmentalism will become popular enough to overtake the traditional political parties, even though Kelly calls the Green party the “anti-party party” (Love 2011, 644). The “anti-party” party could attract more of the younger people, as politics is often seen as crass and corrupted by older people.
