A Rhetorical Analysis of “Against Meat” by Jonathan Safran Foer The standard way of thinking about vegetarianism has it that you either are one or you are not. While it is rarely discussed between omnivores and herbivores over dinner, vegetarians often fall into a category more accurately described as conscientious meat eaters. In Jonathan Safran Foer’s essay, “Against Meat,” he describes his personal plight to become, and remain, a vegetarian through-out his life.
In the book, The Hunger Games, one of the main events is when Katniss volunteers for her sister, Prim, to participate in the annual Hunger Games. After reading this event, I was very surprised. I noticed that Katniss surprised herself by saying she would volunteer, but then quickly recovered once she remembered that the reaping would be shown on television. “…this is upsetting me and I don’t want to cry. When they televise the replay of the reapings tonight, everyone will make note of my tears, and I’ll be marked as an easy target.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a dystopian novel about a powerful capitol reigning over twelve districts keeping them in constant fear of being wiped out, and their children being used in games of survival for entertainment. Katniss Everdeen is the heroine in this novel and she must survive the televised Hunger Games in order to live. The Road by Cormac McCarthy is a post-apocalyptic novel about a man and his son surviving each day while fighting to remain the good ones. The man and his son walk each day down a road while trying to find food, shelter, and stay safe from cannibals.
The title of my book is Lost in the Barrens. It is a fiction book by Farley Mowat that contains 244 pages. The Main Characters are Awasin, Jamie Angus, Alphonse, Denikazi and peetyuk. Awasin is a quite serious and he knows about how to survive in the wilderness and thinks more before he acts. Awasin is good at weaving, making clothing and hunting.
In David and Goliath author Malcolm Gladwell talks about how Vivek Ranadive overcomes many obstacles while building his basketball team full of nerdy girls. At first Vivek didn’t understand the concept of basketball he thought it was a pointless game. Later he became the couch of his daughter's basketball team and went on to compete in the nationals . It shows how sometimes things aren’t so appealing to us at first so we tend to denounce them. Rather than taking time to develop interest or understanding the subject we just label it as a dislike.
In the novel,” The Pigman” by Paul Zindel, two teenagers named John and Lorraine befriend the Pigman. Near the end, the Pigman suddenly passes away. Even though numerous things contributed to Mr. Pignati’s death, the stress of John & Lorraine’s party and Bobo the monkey’s death played the biggest part. John and Lorraine threw a party while Mr. Pignati was at the hospital, but near the end, Mr. Pignati unexpectedly arrived back home.
Since the start of the Cold War, people have been afraid from a bomb like no other in history. Nuclear warfare struck lives of many every since the end of World War II which ended by a atom bomb dropped on Japan wiping out everything in its path. Cormac Mccarthy was a passionate writer and was inspired and terrified by this idea and wrote the Marvelous story The Road. Even though some might disagree with the powerful reality of a possible post apocalyptic hazard.
What happens when the leaders of a country take too extreme measures in order to control the people and stop them from fighting back? The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, is about a dystopia that materialized as a result of that happening. In The Hunger Games, the Capitol and the people of Panem dehumanize the tributes in plenty of different ways. The first way is that they throw the 24 kids into an arena so they can fight to the death like animals. The second way is that after the tributes get to the Capitol, the stylists dress them all up and show them off as if they were dolls.
Following my reading of Malcolm Gladwell’s most recent text David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants, I was compelled to write a letter discouraging further study of the book in the English Language Arts Transactional Focus course at École secondaire Oak Park High School. Earlier this winter, in my own ELA Transactional Focus course, I was assigned a selection of adult, nonfiction pieces to acquire and read. The end goal of this task was to determine its fate with future students. I started the book having many high expectations, but by the second chapter was highly disappointed. Fortunately, this task was facilitated by a book wholly unsuitable for an audience even slightly younger than the intended.
Every four years my family gathers together downstairs in our living room and turns on the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Hearing all the different languages. Seeing all the different flags. All of the world coming together in harmony. Different cultures celebrated.
In the novel “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy has a very dark and sinister tone, but what exactly gives the novel this feeling of dread and hopelessness? The element that gives the book its uniquely dark feel is cruelty, cruelty is defined as:callous indifference to or pleasure in causing pain and suffering. Cruelty in “The Road” not only sets the tone of the story it also shows how barren and barbaric life is in a world where the strongest people are also the cruelest. From the very first page of the novel the reader understands how barbaric life is in this new world where all emotion and good intentions has been replaced with cruelty.

Take some time to think about the world around us. Everywhere a person looks, they see trial and tribulation throughout each individual person. Some take their hardship in life with ease and pride, while others continually blame the circumstances and conditions around us. In Malcolm Gladwell’s novel, David and Goliath, he begins to show that situations have nothing to do with our advantages and strength in life. If we want to have a better turn of events, we need to be the ones to make them, and not let others or our environment be the ones to decide what is going to happen.
Lies. Fears. Death. These are all the characteristics of a dystopian society. Dystopian literature are stories that is set in the future and involves a society with dystopian themes, such as flaws and rebels.
Ben Lee Mr. MacDonald Post-Apocalyptic Literature June 7, 2023 Human Condition: When Humanity Meets Its Extreme The Road, a novel by Cormac McCarthy, depicts a journey about a father and his young son’s journey on the road as they make their way to the South in a post-apocalyptic world. The novel engages readers by highlighting many interactions between the characters, especially the interactions between the father and his son. Their journey begins as they search for the warmer region to call home. They experience challenges through external obstacles and internal conflicts. By reading the novel, the readers are pushed to reconsider the human condition as the characters reach their breaking point.
