Peter Gene Hernandez, is a well-known Hawaiian born singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and dancer. He is better known by his stage name Bruno Mars. He was given this nickname by his father, who believed he resembled the wrestler Bruno Sammartino, and he gave himself the name Mars because he believed he was out of this world. His parents met while performing in a show together. Mars was born into a family of musicians, and had an interest for music at a young age. His link to Asia was his mother, who was born in the Philippines and moved to Hawaii before 7 years old, making Mars of Filipino descent. He is one of six children. Tammy Duckworth was one of the first Asian American women elected to Congress of Illinois; she was the first disabled woman as well, along with being the first congresswoman born in Thailand. She was a member of the House of Representatives from Illinois's 8th district. Duckworth was in office from January 3, 2013 - January 3rd, 2017 for two terms with Barack Obama as president. She was born in Bangkok, Thailand. Her father was an American and his veteran roots traced back to the American Revolutionary War. Her mother was Thai of Chinese descent, making her Asian American. Due to her father being in the army, her family frequently moved in South Asia. Therefore, along with Thai, she also became fluent in Indonesian as well as English. The idea of this project came from after reading and discussing many books in this course about the struggles of Asian American from the earlier times. Even now in America, Asian Americans continue to face racism and criticism as they go through their everyday life. One of the most inspiring stories of a man that faced so many failures, only to find himself reach the top of the pyramid is Jack Ma. Jack Ma is a Chinese successful man, but before he became successful, he was just another failure. So, today we’ll talk about a story: the story of the life of a man who has impacted the entire economy and Internet industry of China almost single-handedly. His life is nothing less than the story of Robert, The Bruce and the Spider, that we were taught as kindergartens. This is the story of Jack Ma. Jack Ma is the founder of the E-commerce giant Alibaba and is a stakeholder at Alipay, its sister company which is an e-payment portal. He is now officially the richest man in China with an estimated net worth of $25 Billion, on the back of the recent world record $150 Billion IPO filings of his company. Given all of this, Jack Ma only holds a 7.8% stake in Alibaba and a 50% stake in Alipay.
