Shhhh, Shhhh. The sweet lull of the ocean waves draws baby Peter Nimble to sleep. His woven basket bobs as the waves push it up, down, up, down. Suddenly, a raven swoops down and perches on the edge of his basket, leaning forward and pecking out his eyes. This, however, was the first of many hardships for Peter Nimble in the book Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes by Jonathan Auxier. In fact, Peter’s story teaches us that life’s journeys change us in numerous ways. First, we will view how Peter’s journey makes him more resilient. Secondly, we will visit how he finds himself, even in the midst of all the madness going on around him. Third and finally, we will chance upon seeing the wiser version of Peter Nimble. One of two examples from this book is, “[t]he place proved such an effective prison that not a single man, woman, or creature on either side of the law had ever managed to find a way out” (90). Peter, right in this phase of the book, is trapped in a seemingly endless span of sand, called the Just Deserts. He and Sir Tode--a third of a man, third of a cat, and third of a horse--are stranded there after sailing to find the Vanished Kingdom and save the people within. This is not the first of all the hardships he has to face, however, but this may be considered one of the hardest. The other quote is, “The two were shaking with terrible fear; Old Scabbs was being pecked to pieces not twenty paces from where they hid” (126). Context: Old Scabbs is--was--Peter and Sir Tode’s guide through the Just Deserts. The ravens, who were stabbing Old Scabbs to death with their beaks, are portrayed as evil birds that pecked out Peter’s eyes when he was a baby. These examples show that even with all of these tough times, Peter is faced with lots and lots of challenges, and he will undoubtedly pull through and become more resilient.
