Company History Jim and Janice Dougherty founded the PetSmart that is known today in Arizona in 1986. The first two stores opened its doors in 1987. These founders had the idea for the concept of a pet superstore and when the first two store opened it was known as PetFood Warehouse. By 1988, there were seven stores under the name PetFood Warehouse and all seven started work with local animal welfare groups to hold fundraising and pet adoption events. In 1989, the store name was changed from PetFood Warehouse to PETsMART. With the name change, the stores added the first full-service grooming salon as well as bird, fish, and small animal areas. By 1992 there were 50 PETsMART stores and with all those stores came the first in-store adoption center and veterinarian clinic. PETsMART went public on the stock market in 1993 and in 1994 the idea of PETsMART charities was formed as an independent, nonprofit organization that will help save the lives of homeless pets. Pet training in store was also offered in 1994. In 1996, eight new stores were opened in Canada and in 1998 the 500th PETsMART store was opened. PETsMART introduced their vision statement in in 2000. PetSmart Charities two major goals are to get homeless pets adopted and to prevent more unwanted pets from being born by funding spay and neuter programs. The organization aims to accomplish their goals of saving homeless pets’ lives by getting donations for local animal shelters, as well as hosting adoption events for local shelters in their communities at the PetSmart stores (petsmartcharities.org, 2014). PetSmart charities has helped find homes for 5 million pets, which is one out of every ten adoptions in North America, and 400,000 pets are saved every year with the help of PetSmart Charities (petsmartcharities.org, 2014). PetSmart charities has also funded two million spay and or neuter services since 1994, with 285,000 funded in 2103 (petsmartcharities.org, 2014). PetSmart Charities sponsors several programs, such as Rescue Waggin’ which offers transport for an adopted pet from the shelter to their new home. Rescue Waggin’ has transported 70,000 dogs (petsmartcharities.org, 2014). They also sponsor an emergency relief program that has assisted over 10,000 pets and given $1.6 million to emergency grant support across the United States and Canada (petsmartcharities.org, 2014). 2,800 animal welfare organizations are funded by PetSmart Charities in all 50 states and in ten Canadian provinces
