A Pew Research Center study shows that of all online college students, 73% use the Internet more for their research as opposed to going to the library. The Internet today is an extensive part in the lives of people and enhances learning with access to billions of facts with a few simple clicks. A study from Our World in Data shows that in 1990 about 2.6 million people used the Internet, and in 2015 that number had risen to 3.2 billion. These numbers are growing exponentially, and the Internet is reaching parts of the world it has never been seen before. The Internet is an irrefutable tool for learning in the 21st century and is more efficient and more accessible than ever before. To begin, the Internet is a superior utility for broadening the minds of students everywhere with its endless supply of global connections and scholarly knowledge. Madian Khabsa, a doctoral candidate in CSE, and Lee Giles, a professor at Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST), have recently done a study that predicts that there are over 114 million English language scholarly documents available on the Internet and around 24% are freely available.
