In the short story, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek” by Ambrose Bierce, the main character Peyton Farquhar is a captive of the Union Army during the American Civil War in the early 1860’s. The story is broken into three sections, very similar to William Faulkner’s, “A Rose for Emily” as that short story is split into five sections. The beginning section has Peyton being set up to be hanged by the Northern Army. The second section tells us all about how Peyton was put into this situation and how he was set up by a Union soldier disguised as a Confederate soldier.
