Quarterbacks are viewed as the heart and soul of the team, and with that being said, almost all who are NFL quarterbacks are considered leaders. However there is much more that’s involved when attempting to getting a playoff win, such as a having a great defense. Recently, Sunday November 2, 2014, the Denver Broncos’ defense showed its struggles by allowing the New England Patriots to score 43 points in devastating loss with a final score of 43-21. AFC West Lead Writer Christopher Hansen spotted the crucial errors in the Broncos’ defense and stated in his report “a bad defensive game plan and struggles getting pressure on quarterback Tom Brady made things difficult on the defense—particularly in the secondary.” Unfortunately, Manning hasn’t had the luxury of a great defense, which is a quality that many successful quarterbacks have been provided. Super Bowl rings do not define whether a player is elite or not. They do indicate success, but it does not entirely determine whether a player is amongst the legends or the standard NFL quarterbacks. The difference between Manning and all of the quarterbacks who are more accomplished in the playoffs is that he displays more dedication and commitment towards wanting to be great and wanting to get better each and every single day. Many see this perseverance and devotion, such as Broncos’ owner Pat Bowlen, who stated, “I’ve never seen a guy with so much ability and the dedication to match.” In the opinion of Manning’s critics, it has been his receivers that have been prominent, not him. This is not the case, however. He has had an exceptional receiving core throughout his career, but without him, these receivers would not have the current status and recognition they currently hold.
