The book Night is written by Elie Wiesel. For my history project I had to find a recurring word, or symbol from the novel Night. The word death is used frequently throughout the book. During World War II, Elie, his family, and other jews from the area, were deported to German concentration camps, known as Aushwitz and Buchenwald. In this true novel, Elie takes you through his journey of how horrible concentration camps are and how he survived
They travelled across states including Detroit, Kentucky and Ohio, checking out the sunset, Niagara Falls, monuments, museums and the Adirondack Mountains in New York. The duo has been travelling together since November and plans to do so until Bella has done everything
Edger Allen Poe is an incredible author of horror. His story, The Masque of the Red Death, was an amazing chiller about a party that was ended by a disease. Throughout the kingdom a disease is spreading from citizen to citizen, killing each one who possesses it so the king invites those closes to him to a party where no one can leave and will be safe from the disease but yet in hindsight they were locking themselves in with the disease. Throughout the course of this hair-raising story, several symbols are represented to array Poe’s theme of death. Symbols such as the seven colored rooms, the clock, and lastly the Red Death are all symbols that are displayed to help get Poe’s notion across.
Symbols are prevalent throughout the movie On the Waterfront. Though they are subtle, they are of great importance, the most obvious being pigeons and hawks. A hawk preys on the pigeons, like the mob does with the workers, who are known as the longshoreman. Though the differences between the hawks and the pigeons are clear cut, many individuals are able to shift between them. Likewise, the film On the Waterfront presents two major characters, the antagonist Johnny friendly who embodies the the hawks, and the protagonist Terry Malloy who mutates between both a pigeon and a hawk.
The numerous symbols throughout help the reader to get a deeper understanding of the characters and further develop the story. The symbols
(AGG) Why would authors include symbolism in their books? (BS-1) The use of a major symbol in Under the Persimmon Tree by Suzanne Fisher Staples is seen when Najmah gets her first haircut after her family is killed and her home is destroyed.(BS-2) Other than using the haircut to show Najmah’s reaction to important events, Staples also includes stars as another symbolic idea. (BS-3)
Blue Heaven by C.J. Box is a page turning novel complete with various storylines that all seem to come together in the end, unsuspected twists, and complex characters. In the beginning of the story, siblings Annie and William Taylor disobey their mother and go fishing by themselves. While the are out at Sand Creek, they witness a cold hearted murder on a campground across the river.
Another symbol comes from the food Tita makes and how it affects not only herself, but others around her. Finally, the symbol of fire produces passion and love inside of the characters in the novel and propel the story of the love between Tita and Pedro.
What do symbols mean to you? Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. In F Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, is about a rich guy named Gatsby that moves right across his ex Daisy. Gatsby moves across Daisy on purpose to have a second chance with Daisy by asking his neighbor Nick thats related to Daisy to set up a date at Nick's house for Gatsby to try to get with Daisy again. The author uses symbols such as the green light, T.J. Eckleburg's eyes, and the Valley of Ashes as symbols to support the theme of hope.
Authors use symbols in literary to show you gateways into themes. Some are easily noticed but some are much more complex. In his literary work, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Ishmael Beah uses symbols to underscore his central theme of oppression and freedom. The symbols used in this literary work to show the theme of freedom are the moon and the cassette tape Ishmael had from his childhood rap group. The symbol used to represent the theme of oppression is Ishmael’s dreams or nightmares.
In the novel the outsiders, S.E. Hinton does a great job bringing more readers to the young adult fiction genre. It was the reason she captured the reader that keeps it popular among middle schoolers everywhere. Her revealing acts is why it is a staple for schools and readers throughout the decades. S.E. Hinton does a great job showing revealing acts through the church fire. Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dallas all risk their lives to save people, that alone shows that those three are very courageous and caring, despite being greasers.
In Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe, many symbols are used to justify the overall purpose and meaning of the story. These symbols include the ebony clock, the seven chambers, the scarlet and black room, and the Red Death itself. Each of these symbols help characterize the Prince and his guests, along with foreshadowing the overall outcome of the story. First of all, the seventh chamber and ebony clock not only provide a sense of eeriness, but reveal the underlying personalities and outcomes of the characters. For example, Zapf writes, “In the process of the story, of course, the seventh chamber more and more becomes the center of attention, and with it the clock of ebony which symbolizes the structure of temporality underlying and terminating all human
Symbols are used all throughout the book to add depth to the story. One example of this would be how the children all receive different things as they get older, and how each item has something to represent. A quote that shows this is “females lost their braids at Ten, and males, too, relinquished their long childish hair and took on the more manly short style which exposed their ears” (p. 46) A second symbol in the book is Jonas seeing the color red which is a very “Emotionally intense color” and symbolizes the arrival in conflicting emotions in Jonas. A third and final example
The scarlet letter has different meanings throughout the story and to each of the characters. The original meaning of the scarlet “A” is “Adultery”, but later in the story the townspeople and other characters begin to interpret it in different ways, each of them with their own idea and belief. Hester starts being more active in society and that makes the townspeople think differently about the scarlet “A”. The scarlet letter doesn´t keep the same meaning throughout the whole story, it changes with Hester´s actions and the Puritans beliefs. Hester starts being more active in society, she starts helping the poor and nursing the sick.
An example of a symbol in the text is the pool that becomes filled with green weeds when Duane stops cleaning it: “I stopped cleaning the pool. It filled up with green gick so that the guests wouldn’t use it anymore.” (ll. 3-4, p. 144). This happens contemporary with Duane’s extramarital affair and thus, it happens contemporary with the incipient fading of Duane and Holly’s relationship. Therefore, the pool is a symbol of the decay or failure of the relationship between Duane and Holly.
