In Phantom of the Opera, there were many conflicts in this story. One key conflict from the play is Christine and Phantom’s relationship and how they felt about each other. Their relationship is what caused many other conflicts to happen and more.
When the Phantom first encountered Christine, he only heard her lovely singing on stage. He thought that her voice was beautiful and that’s how he feels most of the story. He appreciated the beauty of the music, unlike Count de Chagny, who may have other interests other than her voice. The Count loves the “beauty of the faces more than the beauty of the music,” as Phantom said. Carriere also mentioned that Christine’s voice reminded him of another woman, Belladova, who was Phantom’s mother. Then, the Phantom explains his feelings to her and wishes to help her by giving her lessons. Later, Jean-Claude offers her another place to stay, at no cost to her, but Christine declines. Why would she decline a free place to live? She is having lessons from the Phantom and enjoys her lessons enough to not want to leave. If she didn’t want the lessons, she would have left, but she says she is happy with her current room, downstairs in the opera house.
After Christine’s performance of Marguerite in Faust, Carlotta was angered that she didn’t get to be in the spotlight and poisoned her so she can’t sing. The Phantom helps Christine by kidnapping her away and locking her up. The Phantom loved her so much that he would keep her out of danger at all costs. He let his guard down for her and unmasked his face because Christine thought the power of love would let her see his face. She fainted at the sight of his face.
