Phi Lambda Personal Statement

Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated with people. However, it wasn’t until I came to college that I recognized my passion for them. I joined Sigma Phi Lambda my first year of college, and that decision began my journey of discovering what I was passionate about and ultimately what I feel as though I have been created to do. I joined Phi Lamb because I knew I wanted to get involved on campus as well as have a community of people I could share life with. I had no idea that I would end up discovering so much about myself through my time there. In all sororities, each new member is paired with an active member that mentors them and helps guide them through their time in the sorority as well as time outside of it. I gained so much knowledge and experience during this time that has completely transformed many aspects of my life. The purpose of the shelter I worked at is to provide safe, temporary housing for homeless women and their children who are victim to either domestic violence or human sex trafficking. The guests come from every walk of life. Some have come from wealth, others from extreme poverty, and many from in between. Although many guests come because of similar abuse, all guests have a different story, situation, and abuser. My role during my time there was to be a guest advocate. This role required me to be available to meet the immediate needs of the guests, help out with cooking and cleaning responsibilities, gather information via telephone or face-to-face from prospective guests, and assist with intakes according to policy and procedure. Before my time there, I had never been around people who had been through the amount of trauma that the guests had been through. It was a culture shock for me to work with women who had not only gone through so much, but who were on hard drugs and had many mental issues they were struggling with. I was fortunate to work with a staff of intelligent and experienced women that taught me a lot about what the guests were going through and how to care for them in the most beneficial
