Mental health problems have been a major problem for soldiers and veterans since the war started. Health diseases like depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety are all developed from war and combat. We can see in the story that most of the characters returning from the war have mental problems, including the main character Sgt. Price. However, there are many instances throughout the story where Price displays signs that he is dealing with mental problems. Phil Klay’s story “Redeployment” shows many instances where mental health was a problem for the soldiers who have come back from serving time. This illness has affected the lives of many soldiers and keeps them from living normal life. This occurs from living through traumatizing events that change their output on the way they see things. Klay’s story relates to PTSD and is displayed through the narrator Sgt. Price. In the story, there are many instances where Price shows signs of having PTSD. One example of Price showing signs of having PTSD is when he was on the flight back home from war. Price was reflecting on all the traumatic events that had occurred while he was at war. He talks about Eichholtz and how he has witnessed him get shot and killed right in front of his eyes. Price states, “A few weeks later, Eichholtz is climbing over a wall. Insurgent pops out a window, shoots him in the back when he’s halfway over. So, I’m thinking about that” (Klay, 2015). He is reliving the moment when he witnessed his friend get killed.
