It is difficult to get used to speaking in first person language. I also found it difficult to ask the players what disability they have. Often times it would come up in conversations, and other times I felt like I did not need to know or ask the player what their disability is. However, when I did talk about it with the players, I tried to be careful with my words. I would say “a person with a disability” rather than as part of the person. In the discussion of deaf students wanting a college only for deaf students, I was able to relate that closely to Philadelphia Power Play. There is nothing wrong with an organization only allowing daily power wheelchair users to participate in their events. Rather, it builds a strong community amongst the people using power wheelchairs. This may be the only opportunity for the hockey players to play a sport with other power wheel chair players, let alone see thirty of their friends playing in power wheelchairs as well.
