1968 — the year Philip K. Dick wrote Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, but also the year that Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated. 1968 — the year in which Europe and America started to import cars which affected jobs and industries in the USA. When the book was published in 1968, our world was in a state of chaos. Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep didn’t become popular until after Philip K Dick passed away in 1982. There have been many changes in our culture that have lead to an escalation of popularity with the works of Philip K Dick. The reshaping of technology, importance of status, and the increase of artificial products in our world are what have made this happen. Technology has notably affected our modern day culture. From the 80s until now technology has rapidly increased its presence in our daily lives. In our society the competition to get to the top increases more and more. Jealousy leads to even more competition for status. For example Rick owns an electric sheep, but sees his neighbor, Bill Barbour with a real horse. Rick envies Bill so much because he has a real animal while Rick does not. The issue of status and owning an animal plays a large role in this matter. Owning an animal in the story’s world/setting makes others think of you as higher. Truthfully, it’s how far are you willing to go to make this happen. Are you really going to get a mechanical cat to prove to others that you really have a pet while deep inside you actually know the truth. You are lying to yourself, but the real question is, is it really worth it just so others can view you as
