Comparison/Contrast Revision Gloria Macapagal Arroyo once said “The power of one, if fearless and focused, is formidable, but the power of many working together is better.” Phillips and Garrison was a team with one goal in a mind. That goal that they were both moving towards was the abolishment of slavery. They worked closely together with one vision and goal. Garrison was an abolitionist and he was also the president of the anti slavery society. Garrison and his followers advocated the abolition of slavery on moral grounds but did not support armed resistance. Lloyd William Garrison appears in the novel in the very beginning of the novel in the preface. In his preface, people didn't believe that a slave was capable of writing his own autobiography. William Lloyd Garrison's preface is there to help Douglass prove that he wrote the book on his own. In order to prove that he wrote the book on his own, he needs the validation of a white man. Garrison was unyielding and steadfast in his beliefs. He believed that the the Anti-Slavery Society should not align itself with any political party. Wendell Phillips, was a lawyer, who sacrificed social status and a prospective political career to join the antislavery movement. Phillips joined the antislavery movement after witnessing a hostile mob dragging William Lloyd Garrison through the streets of Boston in 1835, and they later became close friends and associates.
