Philosophy Statement

Throughout the semester we have been learning and growing as future teacher candidates, and through the knowledge I have gained I believe I have composed a philosophy on the best way to teach social studies by answering three questions what is social studies, how we should teach it, and what makes me a good candidate for Social Studies Education. My philosophy of teaching social studies is to prepare my students to be informed, competent citizens, in which they use skills they learned in my class to make decisions and form their own beliefs.

Throughout the semester I have learned so much through the assignments I have done and through my field placement in a 5th-grade classroom. However, I think the biggest thing I will take away is it is all about your students. Not only as a teacher is your job to teach and prepare your students for the future, but it is also to be there for them when they need it. Especially as a middle grades teacher, I will take on so many roles, such as role model, mediator, and a friend. I plan to be whatever I need to for my students and help them through any problems that they might be facing. While it is important to be there for them it also important they are learning and engaged in the classroom. As a candidate for social studies education, my goal “is to spark interest, activate prior knowledge, tap a wide range of intelligences, and prepare students to tackle new concepts” (Bower). I believe I make a good candidate for Social Studies Education because I want to prepare my students to be informed, competent citizens, in which they use skills they have learned to be an active and participating member in
