Imagine being a jewish person in one of the deadliest wars. How would you survive? How would the news of the war affect you? For many people this isn’t just a question, it's a reality. Like in the book Maus where it follows Vladek and his attempt to keep him and his family alive during the Holocaust or in the poem “Often a Minute,” hearing the news about the Holocaust and seeing all the new people joining in.
He talks about the life of Angel Espinoza, a Mexican illegal immigrant and brings up his own own grandfather who was an Irish immigrant. Tierney argues that Hispanic immigrants are simply trying to achieve the American dream for themselves and their descendants, just as the Irish did. In the 7th paragraph it says, “It’s been argued that Mexicans are different from past immigrants because they’re closer to home and less likely to assimilate. Compared with other immigrants today, they’re less educated, and their children are more likely to get poor grades and dropout of school. Therefore, the arguments goes, Mexicans are in danger of becoming an underclass living in linguistically isolated ghettos.”

Response to “Our Fear of Immigrants” In “Our Fear of Immigrants” Jeremy Adam Smith takes a neutral stance on the immigration and anti-immigration argument. Smith begins by telling the story of a 4th grade class at Jefferson Elementary School in Berkeley, California who try to fight back against immigration laws after a classmate of theirs was deported back to his home country. Smith then goes on to compare the 4th graders to the adults of their town who fight for stronger immigration laws asking his readers what qualities the children possess that the rest of the citizens do not to make them react so differently.
The Story of the Vargas Family “Rosa Vargas’ kids are too many and too much. It’s not her fault, you know, except she is their mother and only one against so many” (Cisneros 29). In the novel The House on Mango Street, the author, Sandra Cisneros, touches on the many negative consequences of a single, impoverished mother raising an overwhelming amount of children. Poverty, discrimination, parental and neighborly responsibility, and respect are all issues and social forces that act upon the family; their presence or lack thereof cause several grisly occurrences to take place. Poverty was almost like a curse given to Rosa Vargas by her husband, who “left without even leaving a dollar for bologna or a note explaining how come” (29).
He supports this argument by telling his own story of being forced to learn English by the bilingual education system. The experience he had learning English made him experience great embarrassment, sadness, and change. Rodriguez concludes his experience by discussing how English had changed his personal life at home: “We remained a loving family, but one greatly changed. No longer so close;no longer bound tight by the pleasing and troubling knowledge of our public separateness.” By learning English, Rodriguez’s family is finally able to integrate into society without language barriers.
These strategies work on the rhetorical appeals ethos and pathos. Exemplification appeals to pathos by making the audience feel sympathy for the immigrants for what they give up, and authority figures appeal to ethos by giving credibility to an expert, by supporting the argument through strong facts. In this essay, I plan to explore how these rhetorical strategies act on their respective appeals, how this is used to strengthen the Suarez-Orozco’s argument to persuade their audience, as well as explore other sources that may support this claim. One of the key strategies used by the Suarez-Orozcos, was the use of exemplification. An assumption they make is that their audience is a group of Americans who haven’t heard the stories of immigrants and the risks they take, but instead just assume they know the story.
This shows us that the language barrier can not only have an effect on the immigrant themselves but also their children. Furthermore there are situations where the immigrants affect the country both positively and
Argumentative Writing Undocumented immigrants are getting deported and they can’t have an experience they wanted to have when they came to america. But, because of the us government they can’t have this experience some get this experience but they still have to be very careful. They all also fear because some of them have kids then they fear for themselves and then there kids because it’s their family. Do you want to live in a community where you see mexican and people on the streets because of crossing the border. This is why i think that the government shouldn’t deport undocumented immigrants because then they don't get a chance to have an american experience.
Rhetorical Analysis on Race to Nowhere The text being analyzed is a film called “Race to Nowhere” by Jessica Congdon and Vicki Abeles. In this film, the directors talk about the stress and pressure placed on students to do well and to succeed in today’s educational system. There are multiple speakers in this film including students, teachers, and parents.
For a nine-year-old who wants nothing more than to make her mother proud this was exciting. In the beginning, we can see her excitement and desire, “in the beginning I was just as excited as my mother, maybe even more so.” (Tan). However, as we follow the story we see her excitement quickly fade to sorrow and anger. The high expectations immigrant families place on their children is still a very relevant social issue and can be witnessed throughout the United States.
Many young children whose family practice native customs are afraid to reveal that they are not “pure” according to Spanish standards.
