The Phoenix constellation, abbreviated as Phe, has also been recognized as an Eagle, Griffin, Young Ostrich, and to the Chinese, a Fire Bird. The constellation was introduced by astronomer Petrus Plancius who derived it from the observations of navigators Frederick Houtman and Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser that were taken in the late sixteenth century. The Phoenix is best seen in the south sky and takes up an area of four-hundred and sixty-nine square degrees. Constellations surrounding The Phoenix are Eridanus, Grus, Fornax, Tucana, Sculptor, as well as Hydrus. It contains five stars known to have planets. There is only one meteor shower correlating to The Pheonix, it's named Phoenicids and occurs on the fifth of December. Many cultures have myths surrounding the ancient fire bird such as the Greek, Persian, Arabic, Egyptian, Roman, Turkish, Indian, Chinese, and many others. Ovid, a Roman poet as well as mythological writer, wrote that a Phoenix would live for five-hundred years, once those years were over the bird would build a nest on a palm tree made of cinnamon then would ignite the nest and would perish in the flames. A farmer in a small village in the mountains had been sitting out in his garden when a plant had spontaneously caught on fire.
