Phonemic awareness and Phonics are two of the biggest parts of reading and learning to read. Using both phonemic awareness and phonics together will make a student a very good reader, not only will they learn how to read but all the parts that go along with reading. Learning how to recognize the sounds and what letters go with the sounds is what phonics and phonemic awareness is about. With these to processes students learn that certain letter goes with certain sounds and with that you can also combine letters to make new sounds. “Phonemic awareness is children’s basic understanding that speech is composed of a series of individual sounds, and it provides the foundation for phonics and spelling.” (Thompkins, 2014, p 142) Phonemic awareness is the process where children learn the letters sounds and begin to understand that letters can make those sounds. Children can become phonemically aware by identifying sounds in words, categorizing sounds in words, substituting sounds to …show more content…
(Thompkins, 2014, p. 152) Phonics is the process where children learn that combining letters will make different sounds. Combing vowels and constants will make different sounds and that is the bases for phonics. With phonics there are many rules that can be used and there are some rules that are not really used because there have begun to be more exceptions to the rules than the rules apply to. There is one rule that does apply the cvc rule, which says that when a one-syllable word has only one vowel and the vowel comes between two consonants. (Thompson, 2014, p. 157) When a student is able to combine letters to make sounds they are able to read. One thing that you can do to help students to build phonics is to teach them cvc words and by practicing these they will learn that all letters have their own sounds but also make other sounds when put
