Polyphemus is Wanted In Homer’s “The Odyssey,” Odysseus meets a cyclops named Polyphemus. The Ithacan army finds a cave full of food, and they decide to collect some goods. The cyclops then comes and encloses them in the cave.

The Greeks believed in a system consisting of 8 evil Greek thoughts. This is a social contract determining what would hinder oneself from their higher purpose. In the excerpt of the epic The Odyssey, “The Cyclops” consists of the supposed hero Odysseus and his crew outsmarting the cyclops Polyphemus. While doing so, Odysseus demonstrates multiple evil thoughts, thus endangering himself and his crew. During the episode of “The Cyclops,” Odysseus demonstrates Hyperephania (pride), Kenodoxia (boasting), and Orge (anger).
Just as when Telemachus cries for the first time, Odysseus’ first tears reveal his connection to the Trojan War. Like Menelaus, Alcinous does not ask for him to state his identity, due to hospitality, and instead diverts the other guests’ attention. During this first song, Odysseus disguises his tears with his cloak, in order to be respectful to his host, but also because he is not ready to announce his identity. However, when the bard sings the next story, Odysseus cries freely.. This leads Odysseus to his first step in recovery, in which he is publicly revealed to his host.
Following comes the story of “The Odyssey”, where Homer presents the character of Polyphemus, the Cyclopes who devours Odysseus’s men. When Polyphemus ingests the men of Odysseus open their arrival, Homer gives readers a commentary on the barbarity linked to cannibalism. As with the proceeding stories, had Homer wished to portray Polyphemus as a mere brute or simple monster, he would have written Polyphemus as a murderer or oppressor. However, in order for readers to grasps the gravity of his monstrosity, Polyphemus not only kills his victims, but devours them as well.
Throughout our history the belief in a higher being has been a common practice. There have been many versions of these beliefs and it is understandable why. When a person believes in a superior force it helps them be motivated. In Homer’s The Odyssey you see humans blaming their problems and crediting their success to the gods.
Appropriation is defined as being able to shift ideas, visuals, key concepts, characters and settings from one context into another in order to manipulate old notions into new innovated ones, for example the Odyssey by poet, Homer in comparison to Margret Atwood’s the Penelopiad. The Penelopiad as a modernized, fresh view of a vaguely described character, which originated from the Odyssey named, Penelope. Penelope is an obscure or cryptic female character who is interpreted to be a cunning, sly, secretive, intelligent, passionate character that can be compared to Shakespeare’s Juliet. While one may not consider feminism to be in The Odyssey, it is quite present. The definition of feminism is advocating for gender equality through organized actions aimed at advancing women's rights and interests in political, economic, and social spheres. He then ventured on for another 10 years to return to to his homeland of Ithaca. On and on he raced to go home but was challenged with many challenges along his journey. Three major events were when Odysseus got caught in the land of the cyclopes, the journey through the ventures, and when he challenges the suitors to a duel to win back his home and wife.

With a casual overview of human history, one can see that the idea of bending elements of nature to human will rose as early as hundreds of thousands of years ago, perhaps when homo erectus first started cooking food with fire. The idea of the cultural death, the burning of one’s body to prevent one from being consumed by the elements of nature that occupies a most illustrious position in the Homeric world, can be dated back to roughly 20,000 years ago (Lake Mungo remains), the currently earliest recorded act of cremating the dead. In the Odyssey, Homer juxtaposes the society of Cyclops with the civilized human society, demonstrating the stark differences between a naturalistic and a cultural society.

In the text Odysseus' Scar by Erich Auerbach, It tells us that Homer used the term "retarding elements" in The Odyssey. This term means slowing down the suspense built up by Homer in The Odyssey. Auerbach discusses Goethe and Schiller's opinions about retarding elements; Schiller analyzes this elements that is "simply the quiet existence and operation of things in accordance with their natures, Homer's goal is already present in every point of his progress" (Auerbach 655). Based on his analysis, we could know that the element is leisurely delay. This element articulated the spatial and temporal relations in the epic.
