During the first encounter Miles has with Alaska he becomes mesmerized by her physical appearance and becomes convinced of his love for her almost in an instant (Green, 22). The initial reaction towards Alaska’ physical appearance portrays that physical appearance is, in many cases, how two people become initially attracted to one another (Kalish, 2009). Miles’ initial reaction to her appearance indicates he is stunned and this later builds up into a strong affection towards Alaska. Mile’s affection for Alaska due to her beauty led him to sacrifice himself for her as did his friends. Hazel continues to use sexually related humor in order to cover her insecurities about her own body and the pre-existing sexual tensions between the two.
