Our aim as a PE teacher is to bring about in the learner higher acquisition of knowledge and a desirable change in behavior through critical thinking. Teaching and Learning cannot take place in a vacuum but better in an atmosphere structured to help to learn. According to McGuffey (1982), he described the environment of an organization as all elements relevant to its operation and they include direct and indirect action elements. Sports facilities constitute the major components of both direct and indirect elements in the environment of learning. The sports facilities available in a school for the conduct of physical education program determine to a considerable extent the level of lessons of physical education that can be offered Anejo and Okwori (2004)
Moreover, Ekanem(1995) deduced that standard facilities are vital pre-requisites to excellent performances in sports at all levels of participation. Each kind of activities needs appropriate facilities and equipment. Consequently, any restriction of these facilities and equipment create difficulties in planning and teaching physical education program for teachers.
According to socio-ecological and motivational models, behavior at school is not only determined by cognitive abilities of a student but also by environmental factors, such as availability of sports facilities. In the same context, Hallack (1990) also highlighted facilities as a major influencing achievement in the school system. He emphasized that the relevance and adequacy of school facilities contribute to students’ achievement.Fischbein (2000) support this theory that the environment, such as the availability of sports facilities, can act as a facilitator for behavior. The Little relevant research was found that specifically tied sports facilities and teaching and learning, but rather focused on the adequacy of sports facilities and management of school facilities. In order to continue developing the field of physical education, there is great need to better understand teacher and student opinion about the actual sports facilities available. By gaining a better understanding of the influence of sports facilities in teaching and learning will be able to better meet the needs students and teacher.
