When I was applying for college, I was confident in my decision to major in Athletic Training. Science had always been my favorite subject in school and Athletic Training was a way that I could combine my love of science with my love of sports. I thought the profession was very interesting and I knew I wanted to have a career where I could help people.
Growing up, sports were always a big part of my life. In high school, I played volleyball for the school in the fall and for a club team in the winter and spring. At the beginning of my senior season of volleyball in high school, I injured my hip. It took a long time for the injury to be diagnosed. After months of playing through the pain, two MRIs, and seeing multiple doctors, I was finally diagnosed with a labral tear. Not only did I get to work on my own rehabilitation, but I got to observe the other physical therapists working with their patients. Many of the patients in the clinic with me were all recovering after their own surgeries. I continued my physical therapy for four months. My physical therapist was always reassuring and motivating. As I progressed through my rehabilitation protocol, I was able to see the other patients in the clinic progress as well. Every day at physical therapy was exciting. My physical therapist was creative with my rehabilitation, making sure that the exercises were constantly changing and trying to make sure they were relevant to what I wanted to be able to do. While doing my own exercises, I would talk with my physical therapist about the other treatments I saw going on around me. I wanted to know why each patient was doing each treatment. By the end of the summer, I was ready to be discharged, just in time to move in to college. As my last day of physical therapy approached, I was actually disappointed that I would not get to come back for more
