'Post-Modern artists frequently use physicality or experiential art as a major part of their practice '. A postmodern artist expresses their physical and experiential artwork to express the changes in ideas and values since the 1970s. Physicality in art is using material objects to express their ideas and concepts in the physical environment. Experiential art is drawing the viewers into experiencing their own creative worlds.Yayoi Kusama uses physicality and experiential by creating paintings, collages, sculptures, performing arts and environmental installations with psychedelic colours, repetition and pattern. In this artwork, the coast of Little Bay in Sydney, Australia was wrapped using fabric (synthetic woven fibre) which was tied by a polypropylene rope to the rocks. Fasteners, threaded studs and clips helped hold the fabric stay down. These materials made it easier to remove later so as to not impact on the natural cliffs through this whole process and the fabric is also environmentally friendly as it can stop erosion from happening. The ‘physicality’ of the artwork include the senses of the viewers are stimulated, such as being able to see the the whole object concealed. It is a huge sculpture that takes up a large area. The only way to see this is by plane or boat. While the audience views the work they are also noticing the wind, waves and temperature of the location around them. The audience memory is challenged. Many even felt frustrated as they couldn’t work out what the coast looked like before it was concealed, including its colour and shape. It is also frustrating as they cannot enter the coast.The artwork is outside in the natural environment. And this is has made it difficult for many to get to because of its location. Making it something only a few people have physically experienced. This has challenged a lot of people as they have not been faced with these sorts of challenges of experiencing a concealed object before in the timeframe given. Most of us have to settle for the photographs the artist has taken to document the event. The artwork is ‘experiential’ because the artwork would leave the audience with intense and memorable experiences.
