I aspire to become a qualified physiotherapist. I am fascinated by the method of treating a disease or an injury by using different physical techniques to help a patient manage their pain, as an alternative to medication or requiring surgery. My work experience placements have further confirmed my desire for wanting to study physiotherapy and pursue a career in this field. These placements have enlightened me with regards to the role of physiotherapists, in addition to what is required of them. While undertaking my work experience placement with Moseley Oaks rugby team, I worked with two therapists. As I observed and assisted these therapists I exercised many skills. Firstly, time management, I noticed that this skill is a significant factor and of great importance in this field. The therapists had to administer many treatments to all the patients, while working within a specific time frame and having to make sure that each patient receives the full required treatment. I observed them administrating a number of treatments. Some of these treatments include, manual therapy, deep tissue massage and sport taping. Communication is essential to success of a treatment. While shadowing two therapists I understood just how important it is, however, not just verbal communication, but also physical and emotional communication. For example, through a patients facial expressions the physiotherapist can receive feedback, which allows the therapist to gain a better understanding of what might be causing the discomfort.
