Piaget Meet Lilly: Understanding Child Development through Picture Book Characters Kimberly Hutchens Liberty University Online I chose this article because when I was in psychology classes I found Piaget to be the most interesting. In this article it talks about how children books can show you exactly what Piaget was talking about. It also talks about doing this with younger children, and college level adults. Using these books also allows to help students understand vocabulary, and encourage students’ connections between principals, and the students’ lives. Piaget is one of the most noted theorist. He actually studied his own children to discover the origins of knowledge. One of the first stories that is mentioned in the article is Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse (Henkes 1996). I personally have never read this book, I found it online and it is a cute story. Everything that was mentioned in the article about the story was true. There were a couple of different experiments that he used with this story. One that I remember reading about in our book was preoperational thinker, and egocentric. Lilly gets angry with her teacher because she didn’t understand why her teacher took away her treasures. Picture books might be simple and for children, but the older you are it has different meanings. A teacher that is mentioned in the article is Juchartz he uses the works of Dr. Seuss, and Shel Silverstein. Another teacher Charlesworth uses the character Ramona (Cleary 1968) in her child development class. Ramona is a girl who throughout all of her books moves from the preoperational stage to the concrete operational stage. When I was growing up I loved Ramona.
