I chose ‘Picture Bride’ from the book ‘Yobo: Korean American Writing in Hawaii’ since the author is a Korean and throughout the readings for the class assignments I was most intrigued by the part that many female Korean migrated to Hawaii came with the marriage promise. The match making practice, Picture Bride, and its experience intrigued me as now it is considered the marriage is an act of two people based on love, however, majority of Korean migrated to Hawaii got married based on merits. The poem, ‘Picture Bride’ by Cathy Song expresses the sentiment of picture bride through the remembrance of her grandmother, who actually once a picture bride.

From the beginning, I will express the first emotion, curiosity, through the ‘Minsok Chum’. Since the ‘Minsok Chum’ is an upbeat dance it will matches the emotion the most than any other dance forms. The middle part of the dance will focus on expressing the journey of picture bride utilizing Taiji and Zen dance movements that are slow. When I describe the journey, the Zen dance walk will be a useful base movement to express picture bride’s physical movement from Korea to Hawaii. I will utilize Taiji because it is slow form of dance which will be useful for the expression of picture bride experience of long distance journey and deep concern to uncertain future. I will finalize my performance with Chang quan dance. The final chapter intends to imply the meeting of the bride and groom and their upcoming future. As I described earlier, I could feel hope or positive future as each person was not alone anymore and formed a family. This emotion or scenery can be expressed with Chang Quan dance most adequately as the movements of the dance are strict and disciplined, from which I will draw the image of their forward movement for bright future in the foreign
