Calvin Hillis-Piecyk AP Language and Composition Period 2 Mr Bagley Michelle Obama served as the first lady to Barack Obama from the years 2008-2016. During her time as First Lady, she had many successful projects concerning children in the school system. Michelle viewed the younger generation as the future of America. As a result, she made initiatives such as the Reach Higher Initiative, targeted towards the youth of America in an attempt to get more students into higher education. She used rhetorical devices such as parallelism to emphasize that your culture, religion, ethnicity, and background all play a part in your identity. When Michelle says “Our diversity of faiths and colors and creeds—that is not a threat to who we are, it makes us who we are.” it adds to the idea of the American dream as this idea of diversity can be used to show that America is a place for anyone to achieve success, no matter their background.
