The True Nature of Humans is Revealed in the Cruelest Ways Piggy is ugly without sense, unwanted, and ridiculed by his island-mates throughout the entire novel. He is seen as the biggest outcast on the island, but he goes through a journey of self-discovery that differs from the other boy's journeys. Piggy is in search for acceptance, and just wants to fit in with the rest of the boys. The others just want fire, food, water, blood, or rescue, while Piggy just wants some friends. Most of the boys go through a physical transformation or go down a darker path, but I believe piggy goes through a deeper transformation while searching for what he wants.
The children voted for a “chief”, someone to lead them in the right direction, until they get rescued. Piggy found a conch shell; this shell had a huge symbol of leadership, civilization, and unity. The entire time the children were stranded on the island, the conch was there through it all. They used the conch to call meetings, take turns talking, and having everyone come together. The conch got broken the same day Piggy died, this was the total end of their unity, and their society.
Piggy’s outsider status highlights how often people replace logic with desperation in a state of war. Jack does not intend on giving any meat to Piggy when he first kills a pig and gives the excuse that Piggy did not help hunt. Knowing that others got meat when they did not hunt, Piggy responds, “No more did Ralph…nor Simon” (74). The boys are collectively working together to survive on the island, even though they do not all get along. Piggy speaks calmly and coherently, for he trusts that he will be part of the group and get the meat.
For example, when the boys determined that the beast lived atop the mountain where the signal fire was located, they thought they had to go without a fire in order to stay safe from the beast. Piggy quickly came up with a solution to this issue and suggested that the boys moved the fire to the beach. Although the beach did not offer the greatest visibility for the signal fire, it was still far away from where the beast presumably resided (129). Throughout the novel, Piggy repeatedly stressed the fact that the boys needed to remain together in order to survive on the island. Piggy realized that if the group were to break apart, the little bit of civilization and order the boys had left would be lost (which happened later on in the novel—after Jack broke away and started his own tribe, Simon and Piggy ended up getting
Piggy landed on the rocks below. The other death was when Simon died. Simon was just coming out of the forest and the other boys attacked him because they thought that he was the beast. Piggy was the most reasonable boy on the island, he understood the importance of human life and the need to get off of the island. On page 180, Piggy’s maturity comes out when he says “Which is better-to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?”.

Piggy is very intelligent, he comes up with ideas on how to help the boys survive on the island from the moment they crashed on it. Ralph starts begins to admire him for this clear focus on their rescue off the island. “ we can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They'll come when they hear us” (Pg 16)
As the novel has progressed the boys are more described as looking more and more untidy, unclean, slob like, and progressively looking and acting like savages. This change can bee seen all of the boys. We can see this by the way the boys are described by Lowry, “Other boys were appearing now, tiny tots some of them, brown, with the distended bellies of small savages” (201). This is symbolic because it shows how far they are from civilization, not only in their appearances but also in their behavior. This can be seen in the quote when they are described as savages and have killed two of their own.
This displays how Piggy is sagacious and knowledgeable, by giving accommodating propositions in a time of desperate need when the rest of the boys are quite lost and do not quite know what to do, for he is the only one smart enough to dare and bring up such an idea. Suggesting rational solutions and helping the boys find a way by using his intellectuality, to create smoke, exhibits his insightful collaboration in order to get rescued. Another example that demonstrates Piggy is incisive is when he declares, “You have doctors for everything, even the inside of your mind. You don’t really mean that we got to be frightened all the time of nothing? Life…is scientific, that’s what it is.
He always wants to follow the rules, but when you’re stranded on an island, rules are some of the last things you care about. “‘I got the conch’, said Piggy in a hurt voice. ‘I have a right to speak.’ “(44). Piggy’s trying to butt in because nobody will listen to him.
“We may stay here till we die.” Piggy nervously exclaimed. Piggy is a smart boy yet very insecure character. Him and Ralph are the first 2 boys mentioned in the storyline.
Author, William Golding, in his novel, "Lord of the Flies," follows a group of British boys who are stranded on an uninhabited island and try to govern themselves. One of the boys, Piggy, is constantly bullied and considered a nuisance by the power-hungry boys on the island. Golding's use of an isolated setting in the midst of the other boys illustrates Piggy's struggle to liberate himself from their oppression. However the need to survive reveals Piggy's inventiveness and rational mindset.
In the novel Lord of the Flies by Willian Golding, each character has impacts on the overall purpose of the story. Piggy, for instance, have many influences in the novel. The author used Piggy's intelligence and maturity to show the readers how there is evil in each one of us. Though Piggy lacks the quality of a leader, he was the smartest boy among the other boys.
Without his glasses the poor boy is barely see, which is a very difficult thing to live while trying to survive on an island. Also, The way the other characters, such as Jack and his gang treat Piggy, treat and disrespect him just shows how little they care about him. All these unfortunate characteristics/qualities placed upon Piggy, make him the most likely character to survive on the island. Piggy’s death approves that civilization could kill you rather than warning or saving you as a human surrounded by savages. When he stands and tells the boys that this beast you are imagining is not a realistic idea for civilized humans.
Although Piggy has warned the boys of this possible occurrence, they laugh at him and brush off his theory as they commonly do. Piggy’s logical explanations are taught to the boys, but they won’t understand his words because his intellect overpowers the other boys. On the island, Piggy is quite vocal during the meetings, criticizing the boys’ actions. A situation when this occurs is during a meeting and he announces to the boys, “‘That’s what I said! I said about our meetings and things
