Throughout the novel Piggy was known for his intelligence and civilized manner who gave wise decisions through the voice of Ralph. “He’s like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn’t a proper chief” (Golding 126). Jack is noticing how Ralph is talking like Piggy, and how Piggy is feeding Ralph on things to say. Golding mentions Piggy’s specs, or glasses, indicating that they are a symbol of power. “They didn’t take the conch.’ ‘I know. They didn’t come for the conch. They came for something else. Throughout the novel Golding uses many literary devices, but the most far reaching device used is symbolism. Golding associates deeper meaning behind the words he says such as Piggy’s glasses or the conch. The author demonstrates symbolism in the following statement, “‘Jack! Jack!You haven’t got the conch! Let him speak.’Jack’s face swam near him… ‘Piggy’s got the conch… The rules!’ shouted Ralph. ‘You’re breaking the rules!’ ‘Who cares?’ Ralph summoned his wits. ‘Because the rules are the only thing we’ve got!’ ….’Bollocks to the rules! We’re strong-we hunt! If there’s a beast, we’ll hunt it down!” (Golding 91). The author uses the conch as a symbol to civilization. Civilization on the island is slowly started to unravel as the boys were talking without the possession of the conch and neglecting the rules. Golding’s intention is to connect the unraveling of civilization on the island to what is happening during this time period outside of the island, which was a fictional atomic war.
