Moreover, paying personal designers for your wedding, hairstyles, or room design can be very expensive. Here’s a solution to those problems: Pinterest. Pinterest is a social media that enables users to create and share different visuals circulating around ideas or suggestions. If you're looking for gifts, distinctive designs, or events to plan, Pinterest will guide you to several visuals or creative pictures for ideas. Silbermann idea of Pinterest “stemmed from his penchant for collecting” (Weldon). Through his fondness for collecting, it stimulated an idea about himself which correlated with the production of Pinterest. When Pinterest was first launched, it slowly started off with about 3,000 registered users, which isn’t a considerable number of people (Geron). Pinterest differed from other social media’s such as Facebook, and Twitter, because it’s major focus was images as opposed to streaming media (Geron). In other words, due to Pinterest being a visually-oriented website, consumers only mean of using the site was for sharing or posting images. On the other hand, to combat the obstacle of only having a small number of users on Pinterest, the founders focused on their fan base and asked for feedback on how to improve the website. In an interview with Ben Silbermann, he recognizes that the problem wasn’t the product, but “it needed to work on building its user base and connecting with its users” (Geron). As stated by Ben Silbermann, “We didn’t have an engineering problem. We had a design and community problem” (Put a Pin in it). With an estimate of 175 million users, about 75 million of Pinterest users are from the United States, while 100 million of the users is outside of the United State (Mughal). This estimate conveys that Pinterest has effectively reached people within and outside of the United State. While the primary reason users access Pinterest is for ideas, users are also taking advantage of the social media to broadcast their product. So, that enable users to shop on Pinterest. In addition, with a market value of over 11 billion, its value has increased tremendously compared to its prior value of 5 billion (Mughal). As for Pinterest demographics: “81% of users are females, millennials use Pinterest as much as Instagram, and the median age of Pinterest users is 40, however majority of active users are below the age of 40” (Mughal). Some other interesting facts are “Food, Drink, and Technology are the most popular categories for men, 93% of active pinners said they use Pinterest to plan for purchases, and 87% of Pinners have purchased a product because of Pinterest” (Mughal).
