Oh, The Pirate Life “AHOY MATEY” is a friendly, carefree, pirate greeting used by pirates in literature, movies, advertising, and entertainment. The name that often is associated with the fun-loving pirate image is Captain Jack Sparrow. He is the popular character from the movie, The Pirates of The Caribbean. Sparrow’s character adds to the typical stereotype that pirates are dangerous, but in a goofy, fun-loving, don’t-need-to-worry-about-them, sort of way. However, in reality, that is not the truth. Modern day pirates are extremely dangerous and go about the waters well-equipped with deadly weapons and detailed plans to attack innocent victims. Modern day pirates often come from very poor countries and get involved in pirating …show more content…
The film came out in 2013 and was based on the true story of Captain Richard Phillips. The actual event took place in April of 2009. Captain Richard Phillips and 20 crew members were sailing the Maersk Alabama (“Piracy and Terrorism.”) from Djibouti, Somalia to Mombasa, Kenya ("Warnings on Pirates Ignored, Maersk Lawsuits Say."). Four Somalian pirates took over the cargo ship just off the coast of western Somalia by speeding up next to the ship with their boat and hooking a ladder onto the cargo ship. The ship’s crew tried using water spouts to repel the pirates away, but that did not work. No weapons or guns are provided on cargo ships just in case the crew might have an internal uprising on the ship, so they had no weapons to threaten the attacking pirates. Obviously, the theory of no weapons doesn’t work when an external situation occurs. Eventually, the Somali pirates were able to capture Captain Phillips and escort him to the lifeboat of the cargo ship. They would threaten him with his life if he did not obey their commands and do exactly as he was instructed. The pirates made many demands from the government for money and goods. They kept Captain Phillips hostage for five days and demanded a ransom. Eventually, he was miraculously rescued in a top-secret, highly detailed operation by the Navy Seals. Recently, it is was reported that one of the same Navy Seals that rescued …show more content…
Each pirate will carry a gun. That gun is almost always a semi-automatic or an automatic assault rifle. Pirates carry guns to look threatening and to show that they have power, but pirates rarely kill the crew members or anyone on the invaded ship. (The Wall Street Journal.). When the Navy ships are called to come to the pirate-infested ship, all they can really do is circle around the boat hoping to look menacing towards the pirates. Because the pirates have guns and have taken over the ship, they are in control of the ship in that situation. Rarely are the crew members or pirates killed in a seize of the ship. The pirate’s main goal is to get a paycheck by capturing a boat. When the pirates are not able to get what they want and restrain the navy and crew, they will either be taken into custody or in some instances, shot and killed. It does not happen often when pirates strike, but once in a while, innocent people die. Pirates are successful at taking over the ship a good portion of the time because often, the captains and crew do not have what they need to protect themselves. On some occasions, especially in the Indian Ocean, the captain and crews themselves have been ignorant towards all the warnings and signals they receive of possible pirate attacks. However, they are now becoming more aware and knowledgeable about pirate attacks and that there is no such thing as friendly
