Fear is an emotion everyone feels. In various circumstances, fear makes one overwhelmed and anxious, making obstacles challenging to overcome. Occasionally, fear can be the difference between life and death in survival situations.The short story "Pit and the Pendulum", by Edgar Allen Poe, is based on the Spanish Inquisition. The narrator, condemned to death, shares his experience of escaping it. "The 7th Man" written by Haruki Murakami, is a fictional short story about a man who has witnessed his best friend die from a tsunami and talks about his experience 40 years later. Hence, the 7th man’s physical and physiological resilience helps him trust his instincts and face his fears. Rainsford finds himself stranded on an island after falling off his yacht. As Rainsford examines the island, he comes across a chateau. He walks inside and meets a man named General Zaroff. Zaroff lures Rainsford to play his human-hunting game. Rainsford runs as far as he can and tries to escape to avoid death. While running, he has set many traps and is getting chased by Zaroff's dogs. As stated in “Most Dangerous Game” Connell writes "He had to stop to get his breath. The baying of the hounds stopped abruptly, and Rainsford's heart stopped too. They must have reached the knife. He shinned excitedly up a tree and looked back. His pursuers had stopped. But the hope that was in Rainsford's brain when he climbed died, for he saw in the shallow valley that General Zaroff was still on his feet. But Ivan was not. The phrase, "I'm a beast at bay" means when an animal is surrounded, typically the prey, it has no choice but to go against the hunter, the predator, until one is on top. In this instance, it implies that although Rainsford has won, he has not given up being hunted. He has reversed the role of Zaroff being hunted instead. Rainsford, unconcerned that the challenge is over, thinks the game has not yet been completed until one is killed. Over the three grueling days Rainsford has endured, he can ration his fear, surviving what Zaroff has thrown at him, leading up to the moment defeating Zarroff, saving his life, and beating the game. Therefore, Rainsford controls his fear, and valiance helps him persevere through his life-threatening situation, defeating Zaroff's human-hunting
