Question 1: Passive Transport Experiment
Diffusion is the passive transport of materials through a semi-permeable membrane from high concentration to a lower concentration. Because the concentration gradient is moving down, no energy (ATP), is required to transport the materials so the transport is passive. Osmosis is simply the diffusion of water across a cell membrane (“Complete Resource”, n.d.). Many factors can affect the rate of which osmosis occurs, including temperature, surface area, and pressure, among other things (“Complete Resource”, n.d.). This type of testing is used for a variety of different reasons.
