These severe conditions were due to the economic boom and mass production taking place during this century as Canadian was slowing transitioning into an industrialized nation (Newman, 2000). These unruly conditions were seen through the lack of support from business owners on labour unions and the lack of compensation workers received for their work. Workers during this time realized that in order for change, they had to fight for their own rights and take a stand against this injustice (Newman 2000). With this in mind, workers began forming labour unions in order to form a united front in their fight against the injustice they were facing at their jobs at the factories, mines, etcetera. (Newman 2000) However, even though the formations of labour unions were beginning, many owners were not on board with this idea and this was primarily due to the fact that business owners/managers did not want their workers to have a voice and step up, instead they wanted submissive workers. In order to shutdown the uprising of labour unions, companies started threatening to fire these workers taking part in these labour unions such as, Trades and Labour Council and this was possible due to the lack of job security laws put into place in the 20th century (Newman, 2000). These signs include the living conditions, gender inequality and the working conditions during the 20th century. The living conditions at the time were extremely dangerous to the health. Also, the cost of living in the 1900s was extremely higher than what the average male worker made. The working class barely survived the disparity caused by the capitalist society. In midst of the living conditions, new conveniences were being released to the citizen. However, there is no real reason to release all these new inventions as not everyone can afford these items and benefit equally as the new inventions were costly. Secondly, the gender inequality women experienced made them feel as if they were irrelevant to the capitalist society as they did not posses social, legal, nor political equality. However, in the end it was through a capitalist society which granted women suffrage in 1916. Nevertheless, women’s rights should not be a matter up for debate as women deserve to be treated as equals in a capitalist society. Lastly, the working class suffered many hardships in the capitalist society regarding the lack of support from business owners on labour unions, the lack of compensation workers received for their work and child labour.
