Conformity: This barrier deals with an individual or group’s reluctance to think outside of the proverbial box or express ideas that are not in tune with the group’s current mode of thinking or too far outside the realm of tradition. Individuals adhere to the rules, standards of thinking, and interaction to fulfill the need and desire to be accepted, but hindering their own creative process. (Harris & Sherblom, 2011) It is a natural human desire to be accepted and part of a group, this is both a social and emotional need. The nature and motivation behind conformity deals with basic human needs as shown by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs model. (Ghillyer, 2009, p. 279) An individual will satisfy needs to meet the next highest need in the pyramid until they reach self-actualization. This is a method of bringing together diverse groups of people with varying ideas, perspectives, skills and values to generate creative ideas, solutions, and products.
