Brynn Parker Ms. Barnett English 7 2/20/2024 Pluto Pluto is about 3.6 billion miles away from the sun. But, why is Pluto not a planet anymore? Well, Pluto is now classified as a dwarf planet because it is not big enough to exert its orbital dominance. Even though it's not big enough, it doesn't mean Pluto can’t be a planet anymore. I feel Pluto should be a planet because it still orbits the sun and has enough mass to be round. The first reason Pluto should still be a planet is because it still orbits the sun. The website Science NASA states, “Pluto's orbit around the Sun is unusual compared to the planets: it's both elliptical and tilted.” This shows that even though Pluto’s orbit is unusual, it still orbits the sun just taking a longer time than most planets. …show more content…

The second reason why Pluto should still be a planet is because it has enough mass to be round. According to NASA, “A dwarf planet is round and orbits the sun just like the eight major planets of the solar system.” This shows that Pluto meets the requirements of being round with enough mass to be a planet. Others might argue that Pluto should not be considered a planet. The website Space states, “... it is large enough to have become spherical, it is not big enough to exert its orbital dominance and clear the neighborhood surrounding its orbit.” This shows that Pluto can’t or isn’t classified as a planet. I disagree with this because Pluto still orbits the sun and has enough mass to be round. There are only 3 requirements to be a planet and Pluto has 2 of those 3. In conclusion, not only does Pluto have enough mass to be round, but it also orbits the sun. I feel that Pluto should still be considered a planet for these two reasons. People should want to learn more about Pluto, and even try to believe that it should still be a planet and not a dwarf
