How to Design a Pod Fighter
For this month's genre reflection of Science Fiction I read the book called The Roar by Emma Clayton. The Roar takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in which all animals caught a disease simply called “The Plague”. During this time every human on earth retreated behind “The Wall”, a giant wall spanning over the entire northern hemisphere of earth. After this the humans proceed to essentially wipe out the rest of the planet with poison heaving only dust on the other side of the wall.
Bleak grey concrete, dirty floodwater, meat grown in tanks is all Mika Smith has ever known. Except his twin sister Ellie, supposedly killed in an accident. Mika refuses to accept that she is dead. He knows he has to find her. When a

On page 2 it says “The pod fighter ripped through the air leaving sonic scars in its wake” This seems to say that it was somewhat aerodynamic for instance, a cube should not be able to break the sound barrier. Also it describes it as ripping through the air. This brings to mind kind of a knife shape cutting through the air. On page 13 the book reads “The Pod Fighter rose vertically.” This seems to indicate a VTOL or Vertical TakeOff and Landing engine is in a Pod Fighter and is shown in my design.
2. How it works.
When thinking on how it works I thought it must be some sort of downward firing engine to keep it above the ground and also give it VTOL capabilities (page 13) Many times in the book they reference spinning so I believe there must be an upward firing engine to help in the spin. For forward motion there does not seem to be any big break from modern fighter technology except for the exactness of the movement and VTOL while flying. For the exactness of the movement I believe there may be small adjustable-directional jets that help it turn. This technology is often used in spacecraft to help with positioning satellites.
