The Silent Killer Explication: “Alzheimer’s” by Kelly Cherry was published in 1997 during a time of personal struggle for Cherry and her dad. This short, free verse poem consists of twenty nine perplexing lines. The poet’s nontraditional placement of line breaks cause some ideas to fall off in mid-sentence, while others never complete the thought. This creates enjambments which mimic the disease’s confusing nature.
In the poem “The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner” the author, Randall Jarrell discusses the darkness and brutality of war, as well as the role of a soldier during wartime. Jarrell uses an extended metaphor, as well as informal diction towards the end of the poem, to convey his meaning that war is wasteful to some lives and during wartime soldiers are viewed as expendable or disposable. Jarrell contrasts between the darkness and light of the life of a soldier with a metaphor in the first two lines. Jarrell says, “From my mother’s sleep..”, which is viewed as the birth of the gunner, in a normal life, not during wartime, but Jarrell compares the mother to the bomber jet that the gunner sits in, saying he falls into “the State”, which could be

My speaker was Ryan Garcia. I saw Ryan Garcia present his speech at a UIL academic meet. His speech was an poem about alzheimer's. The nature of the meet was competitive and fierce!
There is a harsh ending to this beautiful father-son relationship. In the poem “hey dady” by jesse debenport, I hypothesize that jesse’s father went to work as a pilot and died in a plane crash. In the poem jesse states that he didn’t want his father to get on a plane and that he didn’t want him to take flight. Jesse also stated that his whole family was grieving. Also he stated that he lost his best friend/ brother.
To many people “I am Joaquin” is more than just an epic poem, it is the anthem of the Chicano movement which embodies our peoples struggles and culture. What made the work become the Chicano Movements anthem is the fact that it is a piece that seems to evaluate the Chicanos and their history from the good to the bad. It also seems to emphasize the Chicanos search and struggle for identity starting from the beginning of the Spanish conquest to our modern times. Basically this poem has become such an iconic work because it attempts and succeeds in encompassing as much Chicano history into it and makes no bias choice as it has both positive historical moments and negative, but they all tie back to Chicanos and their history. One of the main aspect that makes “I am Joaquin” an interesting piece of work and an icon for the Chicano movement is how the work seems to

Rina Morooka Mr Valera Language Arts Compare and Contrast essay on “The poet’s obligation”, “When I have fears that I may cease to be”, and “In my craft of sullen art” The three poems, “The poet’s obligation” by Neruda, “when I have fears that I may cease to be” by Keats, and “In my craft of sullen art” by Thomas, all share the similarity that they describe poets’ relationships with their poems. However, the three speakers in the three poems shared different views on their poetry; the speaker in Neruda’s poem believes that his poems which were born out of him stored creativity to people who lead busy and tiring life, and are in need of creativity, while the speaker in Keats’ poem believes that his poems are like tools to write down what
Music is a powerful way to communicate. In the traditional folk ballad “Bonny Barbara Allen,” the use of syllables makes the poem more interesting. The rhythm gives this poem a musical feeling. Furthermore, the examples of alliteration and rhyme tie the poem together, and enhance its musicality. The poem uses poetic sounds to create a more interesting musical quality.
The quote means the lives of men and women lost in war. The reason why it was written was because war poetry didn’t get a lot of attention and it's more imaginative than reading a story.
It is a highly ironic piece, once again rebelling against the idea of traditional heroes. In the poem, the narrator thrice tells different women not to cry, even though their husbands, sons, and fathers are dying on the battlefield, because “war is kind”. The text uses repetition of these three words throughout the text to emphasize the cruelty of war, and the “smallness” of the soldiers- ”Little souls who thirst for fight, These men were born to drill and die.”, shows
The poem A Step Away From Them by Frank O’Hara has five stanzas written in a free verse format with no distinguishable rhyme scheme or meter. The poem uses the following asymmetrical line structure “14-10-9-13-3” while using poetic devices such as enjambment, imagery, and allusion to create each stanza. A Step Away From Them occurs in one place, New York City. We know this because of the lines, “On/ to Times Square, / where the sign/blows smoke over my head” (13-14) and “the Manhattan Storage Warehouse.”
Crush to Closure: The Poems of a Relationship This poetry collection includes many of the poems that I wrote before, during, and after a year and half long romantic relationship that I had. They follow my emotions from my initial attraction to the individual all the way up until the present day. These poems are arranged in chronological order and follow the course of the relationship and the process that I went through to understand it and move on. The themes that these poems cover include loss of innocence, abuse, romantic love, and self love.
It should not be celebrated as a victory, but as something that should never happen again. The figures of speech that are present in the poem are used to emphasize the elements that make up what war is, which are all atrocious. Indeed, the metaphors and personifications contained in the poem compare war to a “fatal flaw” (line 4), a “perversion” (line 5) and the “profoundest disrespect” (line 9), amongst others. In addition, the anaphora of the words “the ultimate” (lines 12, 15-17) is used to show how war only brings the worse in human life (racism, criminality, obscenity and crime against humanity). The euphemism found on line 19 also hints to the aftermath of war for the soldiers, using the expression “troubled man” to refer to soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder.
