I have chosen the poem titled Oxygen by Mary Oliver, found on page 373 in the Meyer text for first analysis. This poem is essential about someone who is seriously ill, however, the tone is rather appreciative and hopeful. In line 5-6, the individual–might be the author herself– kneels by the fire, and this may connect to the fuel that is keeping her partner alive. The burning logs correlates to the life within her partner, that as long as they burn, he will be kept alive. The oxygen fuels the fire burning and also keeps her man alive; however, he is ill and “in his usual position, leaning on his shoulder.”

In the poem “A Litany” by Gregory Orr, the most prominent formal element would be the use of anaphora, with the use of the phrase “I remember”. Although the poem has only one stanza, it is comprised of seventeen lines, and ten sentences. Within this single stanza, it has eight sentences that begin with the “I remember”, and the final two sentences breaking from the anaphora. The two final sentences, comprising the last four lines, are each distinct from each other, as no new anaphora is introduced. Not only is anaphora the most obvious feature, but it is essential for capturing and maintaining the reader’s attention, building momentum and anticipation without explicitly revealing the traumatic nature of the poem as a way to entice (or deter) the reader.

Tony Hoagland uses diction and imagery in this narrative poem to create a melancholy tone. The speaker imagines when their father dies, he will be reincarnated as a dog. They say they know what their favorite sound will be (opening fridge, cracking an ice cube tray, the clink of ice bouncing around in a glass). As a parent, it is so hard to watch your child grow older because you would prefer them to stay little forever. Thinking about your child getting older is scary and can often make you forget to truly take in the special moments while they are young. In Li-Young Lee’s poem A Story he represents this parental feeling throughout the entire poem that focuses on the relationship between a father and his son. Li-Young Lee uses different poetic elements throughout the poem to develop the father’s complex attitude towards his relationship with his son, worried for the future, but still cherishing the present.
How would you feel if someone could control what you were thinking? In “The Feed” written by M.T Anderson, everyone living in the community had a feed in their brain that was controlled by one large organization. Violet, the main character, suffers through a malfunction in her feed that changes the way she sees her society. Most people’s opinions can be changed when they have experienced the benefits and the disadvantages of something. Since Violet is aware of how life is with and without the feed, she becomes hesitant to believing that her community is being run efficiently.
Can people be fully mature? Many teeangers and adults think they are mature and can control many things. Here are two literary works that show how people are not fully mature as they thought. A short story “Crystal Stars Have Begun to Shine” by Martha Brooks and a poem “12 years old” by Kim Stockwood deal with the maturity of people.
People have the need to always prove their self worth to everyone. In the poem The Leaving, Brigit Pegeen Kelly demonstrates how an individual’s environment and expectations of others encourages a person’s actions. In the poem the girl is so dedicated to her work that she’s willing to stay late even when her father doubts her. The speaker takes on the challenge to prove to her father that she can complete her task, and she successfully proves to him that she can do it. By proving her self worth to her father, the speaker faces new challenges along the way that test her own thoughts and decision making which ultimately determines the pursuit of her hard work.
The poem “A Story” by Li-Young Lee depicts the complex relationship between a boy and his father when the boy asks his father for a story and he can’t come up with one. When you’re a parent your main focus is to make your child happy and to meet all the expectations your child meets. When you come to realize a certain expectation can’t satisfy the person you love your reaction should automatically be to question what would happen if you never end up satisfying them. When the father does this he realizes the outcome isn’t what he’d hope for. He then finally realizes that he still has time to meet that expectation and he isn’t being rushed.
The poem, At Mornington was written by Australian poet, Gwen Harwood. It was published in 1975 under her own name. At Mornington is about a woman reminiscing about her past when she is with her friend. There are many themes explored in this poem including memory, death and time passing.
The literary elements in this poem add to the effect the poem has on the reader, which can be different for everyone, but it makes the reader reflect on their own life and how kindness has changed
