Cultural heroes and heroines bring to light the values of their societies to the forefront of a modern audience. These values are expressed through the characters and have functions for their societies. Two ‘national epics’ that depict these values are the Poem of the Cid translated by Paul Blackburn and Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali written by D.T. Niane. By comparing the two epics, there is a similar story for both societies.
