LADY MACBETH enters.
LADY MACBETH
The alcohol that the servants drank has given me courage. What they drank has fired me up. Listen! Quiet! The owl that just screeched sounded like it was saying goodnight just how the bells that sound right before someone is executed. Macbeth is probably killing the king right now. The doors to Duncan’s chamber are open, and the servants that are drunk look stupid sleeping instead of doing their job protecting the king. I drugged them so much that you can’t even tell if they are alive or dead.
MACBETH
(from offstage)
Who’s there? What is it?
LADY MACBETH
Oh no, I’m scared the servants woke up, and he wasn’t able to kill the king. For us to be caught trying to kill him but not succeeding would be the end

LADY MACBETH
Yes.
MACBETH
Listen! Who’s sleeping in the other chamber?
LADY MACBETH
Donalbain.
MACBETH
(looking at his hands that have blood on them) This is a sad view.
LADY MACBETH
That’s a stupid thing to say.
MACBETH
One of the servants laughed while he was asleep, and the other servant cried, “Murder!” and they woke each other up. I stood and listened to them, but then they said their prayers and went back to sleep.
LADY MACBETH
Malcolm and Donalbain are asleep in the same room.
MACBETH
One servant cried, “God bless us!” and the other replied, “Amen,” as if they already knew what I had done. Listening to their frightened voices, I couldn’t reply Amen when they said “God bless us!”
LADY MACBETH
Don’t think about it too much.
MACBETH
But why wasn’t I able to say Amen? I really needed God’s blessing, but I wasn’t able to say the word Amen.
LADY MACBETH
We can’t think like that. If we do, it’ll drive us crazy.
MACBETH
I thought I heard a voice cry, “Sleep no more! Macbeth is murdering someone who is asleep.” Innocent sleep. Sleep that soothes away all our worries. Sleep that rests you at the end of the day. The voice kept crying, “Sleep no more!” to everyone in the house that could hear it. “Macbeth has murdered someone who is asleep, and therefore Macbeth will not be able to sleep anymore.”
LADY MACBETH
Who said that? Why, my admirable lord, do you let yourself become so weak when you think about what you did? Go get some water and wash the blood off your hands. Why did you take the daggers out of the room? They have to stay there. Go take them back to the room and put the bloody on the daggers on the guards.
MACBETH
I can’t go back. I’m afraid even to think about what I’ve done. I can’t stand to look at it again.
LADY MACBETH
You coward! Give me the daggers. Dead people can hurt you about as much as a picture can. Only little kids are afraid of scary pictures. If Duncan bleeds then I will color the servants' faces with his blood. We have to make everyone think that they are the guilty ones.
