In the song “Kevin”, Macklemore , provides a viewpoint on the drug issues prevalent in modern society. He uses a multitude of poetic rhythms to convey his passionate and sorrowful feelings about the subject matter. He uses a wide variety of melodramatic political rhetoric in his song “Kevin” describing the constant “war on prescription drugs”. He takes multiple jabs at the faulty government system and the major corruption taking place in big pharmaceutical establishments. In verse one he begins to explains the negative effects that drugs had on his life “ I seen pain,I felt the losses/Attended funerals and seen coffins ” (Macklemore) this narrates him falling witness to many deaths and funerals especially the funeral of his younger brother “kevin” thus the title of the song. Macklemore tugs at the listener's heart strings, grabbing their full attention. Because in all honesty Who hasn't felt loss? Who hasn't felt pain? Many people all over the globe have experienced loss in some form or fashion. I personally have seen the effects drugs have on individuals close to me , so in some aspect I relate to this line. “ And my little brother is in the sky/ from a pill that a doctor prescribed” (Macklemore) disclosing that an overdose on oxycontin took the life of his younger brother. “Wings clipped by the grip of 80 milligram sniffs of Oxycontin/Everyday through the nostrils / never went away/ never does it stop there.”(Macklemore) uses a metaphor to portray his brother or the ordinary, unsuspecting person trying to cope everyday by sniffing an illegal amount of Oxy. Consequently, his brother was already dancing with death on the verge of overdosing. As a matter of a fact, the legal amount to consume prescribed by a doctor is only 45 mg per day.
