The short story A & P by John Updike is written in the first person point of view. Sammy is the narrator of the story. Sammy is a teenage boy who works at a supermarket. He is a cynical and sarcastic boy. Sammy appeared to think of himself as “more” than the customers who where in the store and the other employees. Sammy referred to the customers in the store as sheep, leaving the reader to think of them as people who had no sense of leadership or worth. Sammy compared himself to the other employees, not wanting to end up with their lot in life, such as an unimaginative drone like Stokesie. When the three girls, only wearing swimsuits, walk into the store we see the true nature of Sammy, a boy who is only interested in the physical appearance
