Many authors may choose to write in the first person’s point of view because it allows the reader to have a direct connection to the character, as it mirrors real life and also gives the reader the ability to know the character’s personality and views of the world. In the short story Weight, the story is being told in the first person by the speaker, to which we do not know her name: “The heaviness I feel is in the energy I burn up getting myself around: along the sidewalk, up the stairs, through the day” (179). This allows us access to the main character’s thoughts, which we would not know/or recognize otherwise from a third person point of view.
